Welding is the melting and fusing together of two items using the heat of an electric arc. The main welding processes used at M.I.L. are Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW).


Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)

This process utilizes an electric arc formed between a tungsten electrode and the work. Separate filler material may be added depending on the joint design. A shielding gas is used to keep the atmosphere from contaminating the molten weld metal. It is a very clean process and is most often used on materials such as aluminum,titanium, magnesium and stainless steel.



Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)

This process utilizes an electric arc formed between a continuous filler metal electrode and the work. The continuous filler metal is provided by means of a spool of wire. It provides the ability to deposit larger quantities of weld metal. A shielding gas is used to keep the atmosphere from contaminating the molten weld metal. It is a fairly clean process and is most often used on materials such as stainless and carbon steel.
